The coyote’s relationship with people is very mixed: either they are reviled as predators or celebrated as cunning and successful. Unfortunately today most people know coyotes only as the butt of jokes in a cartoon. This is a testament to the coyote’s ability to hide from human eyes, as they are found almost everywhere including large urban areas. Originally diurnal they have become mostly nocturnal to avoid discovery. In areas where their ranges overlap, wolves drive out coyotes and coyotes in turn displace the fox. Originally found in the West, coyotes have recently extended their range all the way to the east coast.
