Raccoons are usually found near water where good denning sites are available, and are successful because they are opportunistic in feeding and adaptable to different habitats. They have taken advantage of man’s "progress" by utilizing garbage as a food source and man-made structures for denning. Raccoons are notorious for being mischievous and getting into trouble. These problems arise because they can live in close proximity to man, are intelligent, and have dexterous fingers which can open things like garbage can lids and door knobs.
Their unique personalities have made them favorites for pets. However, wild animals do not make good pets, because they will revert to their wild ways, and many carry diseases which can be transmitted to man.
