« Back to all pests and rodents
Gray squirrels were originally found mostly in lowland mature woods. They have adapted to man’s changing the landscape and are not found even in city parks. The "black" squirrel is a melanistic form of the gay and is the same species. Both forms can be found in the same litter. Prior to 1870 there were many mass migrations of gray squirrels reported. Since the climax forests have been lumbered the conditions do not exist which triggered there movements.
Gray squirrels bury many nuts for future use which they locate by small. Hickory nuts, on of their favorite foods, need to be buried to germinate, and gray squirrels are important to their dispersal. The gray squirrel’s beautiful bushy tail acts as a parachute and rudder during falls.
